1896‐1978 A Russian poet of the Soviet Union. Born into a family of lawyers, he studied at Moscow University's Faculty of Law. From 1915 he worked at the Dramatic Institute under the direction of Vakhtangov, and later became a director at the Vakhtangov Theatre. In 1922 he published his first collection of poems. During World War II he produced the epic poem The Son (1943), dedicated to his own son who had been killed in action. The poem expresses the feelings of Soviet citizens during the war in harsh yet gentle terms, and resonated with many readers.
