The temple was the go-to temple of the retired Emperor Toba. It was built in 1132 (Chosho 1) in Shirakawa, Kyoto, with the nine-statue Shin-Amida-do Hall at its core. As of 1159 (Heiji 1), 12 manors, including Mimura-sho in Omi Province, can be confirmed as its territory. Not much is known about the temple's subsequent state, except that it was damaged by an earthquake in 1885 (Bun'ji 1) and that part of the building was burned down in 1221 (Jokyu 3). Although it was a magnificent temple of the imperial household, it seems to have fallen into decline throughout the Kamakura period. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
