Striped horse mackerel (Caranx delicatissimus)

Japanese: シマアジ(縞鰺) - シマアジ（英語表記）Caranx delicatissimus

A marine fish of the Carangidae family in the order Perciformes (illustration), with a lateral line. It has a blue back, a silvery-white abdomen, and a bright gold vertical stripe on its side. This is where the name Shimaaji comes from, and its English name is Striped Jack. It is long and oval-shaped, but somewhat tall, and is also called Hiraaji (Kumamoto, Fukuoka). However, this is a confused name with Kaiwari (illustration). Young fish have yellow horizontal stripes on their sides. Small ones are called Kose (Wakayama) and Koseaji (Kochi). They can reach a total length of 1m, but extra-large fish are called wolves in Tokyo and are not very popular.

側線上にぜんごのあるスズキ目アジ科の海産魚（イラスト）。青い背部，銀白色の腹部，そして体側に鮮やかな金色の1縦帯。これからシマアジの名があり，英名もstriped jack。細長い小判形だが体高がやや高く，ヒラアジ(熊本，福岡)ともいう。ただし，これはカイワリ（イラスト）との混称。若魚は黄色い横縞が体側に見られる。小さいものをコセ(和歌山)，コセアジ(高知)という。全長1mに達するが，特大魚は東京でオオカミと呼ばれあまり喜ばれない。
