Portuguese navigator and soldier. Born in Alandroal in central Portugal. He entered the royal service in 1481 and steadily rose through the ranks, until he was appointed commander of a fleet of four ships bound for India in 1508. After arriving in India in 1509, he was ordered by Almeida, the first Governor-General (Viceroy) of India, to attack the Malacca Sultanate on the Malay Peninsula, but was surprised by the local inhabitants and failed to occupy the kingdom. He returned to Portugal in 1510. In 1516, he rescued the Portuguese fortress of Alzira in Morocco from Islamic forces at Fez, and in 1517 he again led a fleet off the coast of Morocco.

ポルトガルの航海者，軍人。ポルトガル中部のアランドロアルの生れ。1481年に王室に出仕してから順調に昇進し，1508年にはインドに向かう4隻の艦隊の司令官に任命された。インド到着後の09年，初代インド総督(副王)アルメイダの命を受けてマレー半島のマラッカ王国攻撃に赴いたが，住民の奇襲を受けて占領に失敗し，10年ポルトガルに戻った。16年にはモロッコのアルジラのポルトガル要塞がフェスに拠るイスラム勢力の包囲を受けていたのを救援し，17年にも艦隊を率いてモロッコ沿岸で行動した。
