Chinese mantis - Oomakiri (English spelling)

Japanese: オオカマキリ - おおかまきり（英語表記）Chinese mantis

It is an insect belonging to the order Mantodea and family Mantodea in the class Insecta. It is the largest of the praying mantises found in Japan, and is found south of Honshu and in Southeast Asia, living in grassy areas and on trees. It looks similar to a praying mantis, but is slightly larger, with a body length of 75 to 90 mm. Its body is green or brown. There is a purple-black part near the base of the hindwings, and the rest of the body is mostly brown; in the case of praying mantises, this part is transparent, so they can be distinguished. Adults can be seen from late summer to autumn, and lay spherical egg sacs. The eggs overwinter.

昆虫綱カマキリ目カマキリ科に属する昆虫。日本産のカマキリ類中では最大で、本州以南、東南アジアにまで分布し、草むらや樹上にすむ。カマキリによく似ているが、やや大きく、体長75～90ミリメートル。体は緑色ないし褐色。後ろばねは基部付近に紫黒色部分があり、ほかの大部分が褐色になるが、カマキリはこの部分が透明なので区別される。成虫は夏の終わりごろから秋にみられ、球形の卵嚢(らんのう)を産む。卵(らん)越冬をする。
