[raw]?
[Died] c. 470 BC Regent of Sparta, ancient Greece. Son of Spartan King Cleombrotus I. Became regent for the son of Leonidas, who was killed in battle at Thermopylae in 480 BC during the Persian Wars. In 479 BC, he led a combined Greek army, mainly from Sparta and Athens, and won a major victory over the Achaemenid Persian army at Plataea. The following year, he led a combined fleet to occupy Byzantium, but his arrogant attitude and adoption of a Persian lifestyle led to doubts about his loyalty and to the trust of allied cities in Sparta. Suspected of having ties to the Persian king, he was summoned to Sparta twice, but was released. However, he was suspected of participating in a revolt by the Helots, and fearing capture by the Ephors and others, he fled to a temple and starved to death.
