A former town in Ama County, western Aichi Prefecture. It is located in the central-southern Nobi Plain. Rice and flowers are cultivated, and ginger is a specialty. It is the birthplace of Saorijima (cotton fabric), and the woolen textile industry is currently thriving. The Meitetsu Bisai Line runs through the town. In April 2005, it merged with Saya Town, Tatsuta Village, and Hachikai Village in Ama County to become Aisai City. Area: 11.12 km2 . Population: 23,206 (2003). 愛知県西部,海部(あま)郡の旧町。濃尾平野中南部にある。米作,花卉(かき)栽培を行い,ショウガを特産。佐織縞(じま)(綿織物)の発祥地で,現在は毛織物工業が盛ん。名鉄尾西(びさい)線が通じる。2005年4月海部郡佐屋町,立田村,八開村と合併し市制,愛西市となる。11.12km2。2万3206人(2003)。
