A precision optical equipment manufacturer, mainly producing high-end SLR cameras and semiconductor exposure equipment. Founded in 1917 by the merger of Tokyo Keiki Optical Division and several other companies. The company changed its name from Nippon Kogaku Kogyo to its current name in 1988. A member of the Mitsubishi Group (see Mitsubishi Zaibatsu). During World War II, the company was the core of optical weapon production, but changed course after the war. The company manufactures cameras, microscopes, and various other optical equipment, measuring instruments, and semiconductor-related products. Its technological level is internationally renowned. Its SLR cameras are world-class. Its semiconductor exposure equipment (steppers) is the top product in Japan and a major source of revenue. In recent years, digital cameras have grown rapidly. In 2006, the company significantly scaled back its film camera business, and ended film camera production and sales with the exception of a few products. Head office and factory in Tokyo. Capital in 2011 was 65.4 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 887.5 billion yen. Sales composition for the fiscal year ending March 2011 (%) was 41% precision equipment, 67% imaging, 7% instruments, and 3% other. Overseas sales ratio was 86%.
