Inspiration

It is translated as inspiration, inspiration, or revelation. It means an important idea that suddenly appears during the process of solving a problem, during the execution of a creative task, or during religious training, or the appearance of such an idea, or the stimulation or impression caused by an idea. The original meaning of the word was to breathe in air, but by extension it has come to mean the effortless entry of ideas from the outside world, like inhaling air. It is said that the common stages in the process of invention, discovery, creation, etc. are (1) a long and arduous preparation stage, (2) the problem warming stage, and (3) the stage where inspiration occurs. The problem warming stage (2) is a period during which the situation is unconsciously restructured and new ideas progress, such as during sleep or while working on other tasks. It is said that Einstein spent seven years thinking about the problem of the speed of light before writing his famous paper on the principle of relativity, and finally wrote the paper in about one month due to a revelatory inspiration.

There is a Japanese word similar to inspiration: intuition. There are intuitions that appear in relation to recognition and judgment, and intuitions that are found in actions and will processes. Intuition is not the result of long thought, but an appropriate guess that appears without any clues.

ひらめき、霊感、啓示などの訳語が使われる。問題解決の過程や創造的課題の遂行中や宗教的修行の途中において、突如として現れる重要な着想、または、そのような着想が現れること、あるいは、着想による刺激や感動をいう。本来の語義は空気を吸うことであるが、転じて、吸気のように努力なくして外界から着想が入り込んでくることを意味するようになった。発明、発見、創造などの過程に共通して現れる段階として、(1)長くて苦労の多い準備期、(2)問題の温め期、(3)インスピレーションのおこる段階、などがあるといわれる。(2)の問題の温め期は、睡眠中や他の仕事をしている期間などで、無意識的に事態が再構造化され新しい着想が進む時期である。アインシュタインは有名な相対性原理の論文を書く前の7年間、光の速度の問題を温めて考え、ついに啓示的ひらめきによって論文を1か月ほどで書いたといわれる。

　インスピレーションに似た日本語に、勘がある。勘には認識判断に関連して現れるものと、動作や意志過程においてみいだされるものとがある。勘は長い思考のすえではなく、手掛りなしで現れる適切な見当である、といえよう。
