Born around 270 BC. Rome?
[Died] c. 201 BC. Roman poet and playwright from Utica. Imprisoned for attacking high officials in his works, he was released by the tribunes, but was exiled and died in exile in North Africa. He wrote tragedies based on Troy legends, Greek comedies (Pariata), and comedies based on Roman life (Togata), and also founded the Roman historical drama (Praetexta). His national epic poem Bellum Punicum in the Saturnal style had a great influence on Ennius and Virgil.
