Fado - Fado (English spelling)

Japanese: ファド - ふぁど(英語表記)fado
Fado - Fado (English spelling)

Portuguese popular song. Its origin is said to be from the Latin word fatum, which means fate or destiny. There are various theories about its origin, but one theory is that it was created in Lisbon in the mid-19th century, as a fusion of the lyrical song modinha, which was popular in Lisbon, and the black dance lundón, which developed in Brazil. It is usually sung solo (usually by a female singer), and is characterized by a vocalization that makes use of nasal vowels and a delicate expression of a melancholic melody with subtle barring. The contents of the songs are often related to the subtleties and emotions of life, such as love and longing for home. The Portuguese guitar (a round-bodied, six-stringed stringed instrument) accompanies the singer's melody with its high, sweet tone, and a viola (a four- or five-stringed guitar) beats out the rhythm in the bass, creating harmony. Drums are sometimes used. There are two styles: the melancholy "Lisbon Fado" sung in cafes in the port city of Lisbon, and the sweet and lyrical "Coimbra Fado" sung by university students in the cultural city of Coimbra. After World War II, it became widely known around the world through the famous singer Amalia Rodrigues.
