An early alphabetic character discovered in 1905 by British archaeologist W. M. F. Petrie at the Sarabit el-Khadim ruins in the south of the Sinai Peninsula. All Sinai inscriptions written in this character are crude, graffiti-like, and are thought to have been used by people involved in the copper mines that were located here around 1700 BC. In 1916, British Egyptologist A. Gardiner deciphered part of it and estimated that it was close to the prototype of the Phoenician alphabet, which consists of 22 consonant letters (the prototype of all later alphabetic characters). It is based on the principle of acrophony (a method of indicating the initial sound b with a figure representing bēt "house").
