Russian author. Born into a family of Ural priests, he graduated from the Perm Theological Seminary and studied at the St. Petersburg Medical University. Influenced by the Narodnik ideology, he lived in Ekaterinburg for 14 years from 1877, closely observing the unique folk customs of the Urals and leaving behind masterpieces of regional literature such as The Great Wealth of the Privalovs (1883), The Mountain Cave (1884), and The Brothers Gordeev (1891). These vividly depict the simple lives and moral nobility of the common people, in stark contrast to the debauchery and extravagance of the speculative entrepreneurs who flocked to the mines.

ロシアの作家。ウラルの司祭の家庭に生まれ，ペルミの神学校卒業後ペテルブルグ医科大学に学んだ。ナロードニキ思想の影響を受け，1877年から14年間にわたってエカチェリンブルグに住み，ウラル地方独特の民衆習俗をつぶさに観察し，《プリワーロフ家の巨富》(1883)，《山の巣窟》(1884)，《ゴルデーエフ兄弟》(1891)などの地方文学の傑作を残した。そこには鉱山に群がる山師的企業家の放蕩，浪費とは対照的な民衆の素朴な生活と道徳的高潔さが活写されている。
