This is a representative dry lacquer sculpture of the Chinese monk Ganjin from the Tenpyo period, and is housed in the Goei-do Hall of Toshodaiji Temple. It will be opened to the public on June 6th, the anniversary of the temple's founding. It may have been made just before Ganjin's death (763), and is the oldest portrait still in existence in Japan.
