A passerine bird of the family Emberizidae (illustration). It is about 19 cm long and slightly smaller than a shrike. Because of its beautiful plumage, it has long been imported as a pet bird. The male has a prominent crest, and its head, crest, throat, and upper chest are crested red. Its back is gray-blue, and its underside is whitish. The female's plumage is duller than the male's. Young birds lack the crest on their heads and are pale brown. It is found from southern Brazil to Bolivia and central Argentina. It lives in marshy scrub forests and does not live in flocks.
