Loggia (English spelling)

Loggia (English spelling)
An architectural term. A term generally referring to an open colonnade. It is often used to refer to a space from which one can enjoy a view of the upper floors of a building, which were widely built in Europe from around the end of the 15th century, but it can also refer to a porch in front of an entrance. Since the Middle Ages, it has also been used to refer to small open-air buildings built in public squares as seating for VIPs during ceremonies and festivals. The Loggia dei Lanzi (1376) in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence is an example of this.
