A perennial herb of the Campanulaceae family, distributed in the temperate zone of eastern Asia. In Japan, it grows wild in parts of Honshu and Kyushu, and in mountainous areas. The plant is covered with coarse hairs, and the stem is erect, 50-100 cm tall, and the rhizome spreads horizontally. The leaves are alternate, 5-12 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, and oblong, with sawtooth edges. The lower leaves have stalks, but the upper leaves are stalkless. In August, the plant produces racemes at the top of the stem and many purple flowers. The bracts and calyx are linear, and the corolla is deeply divided into five lobes. Each lobe is also linear, about 1 cm long, and recurved, making it look like a polypetalous flower. The capsule is slightly flattened and oval, 5-6 mm in diameter. The name was given to the finely cut corolla, which resembles a four-handed hand used in Shinto rituals.
