In a broad sense, it is a general term for the work that schools do directly or indirectly to achieve their goals, other than teaching subjects and teaching student activities. In a narrow sense, it refers to educational activities that are positioned alongside student activities and class guidance in the special activities that form the third area alongside each subject and moral education in the current educational curriculum. Therefore, when used in the narrow sense, PTA meetings and training activities for teachers and staff are not considered school events. In the curriculum guidelines, school events are further divided into six categories: ceremonial events, academic events, physical education events, travel events, health and safety events, and labor and productive events. According to this classification, for example, athletic meets and athletic festivals would be included in physical education events, while entrance ceremonies and graduation ceremonies would be types of ceremonial events. However, among the various school events held by schools, there are many that are difficult to classify unambiguously into one of the six categories, and many that would be better thought of as student activities. Many school events are expected to utilize the knowledge and skills acquired through the study of each subject in an applied and comprehensive manner, and many are expected to involve the independent participation of students and pupils, and in that respect they have great educational value. However, in the case of seasonal events that have deep ties with the local community, there are cases where the autonomy of the school in carrying them out is questioned, and there are also cases where it is argued that they should be carefully selected.
