Kyoto Five Mountains
The name of the five great temples of the Rinzai sect located in Kyoto. In 1334, Emperor Go-Daigo changed the Kamakura Five Mountains to Kyoto and ranked them with Nanzen-ji at the top. After various changes, in 1386, the five temples of Tenryu-ji, Shokoku-ji, Kennin-ji, Tofuku-ji, and Manju-ji were decided, with Nanzen-ji as the chief temple and Daitoku-ji as the second.

京都所在の臨済宗五大寺の称。1334年後醍醐天皇は鎌倉五山を京都中心に改め,南禅寺を筆頭に格づけを行った。のち種々の変遷を経て,1386年天竜寺・相国寺・建仁寺・東福寺・万寿寺の五寺が決定され,別に南禅寺を首格,大徳寺を次とした。
