Inmarsat - Inmarsat plc

Inmarsat - Inmarsat plc

A private communications company that provides mobile communications services via communications satellites. It also refers to the satellite communications system used in this service and the geostationary satellites that provide the satellite communications lines. Its predecessor, the International Maritime Satellite Organization (INMARSAT), was established on July 16, 1979 by intergovernmental treaty as an international organization to manage and provide comprehensive mobile satellite communications services, mainly at sea, on a global scale. Its headquarters are in London, and services began in 1982. Initially, the organization aimed to provide ship communications services at sea, but as it soon began to connect not only ships but also land, aircraft, and land mobile vehicles, the organization changed its name to the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) at its 10th general meeting in 1994. In response to changes in the environment, such as private companies entering the satellite communications business and intensifying competition, it was decided to privatize the business division in 1998, and Inmarsat plc was born as a private company. In April 1999, the company took over the operation of the communications satellite "Inmarsat" and the provision of communications links from the organization and began operations. As of the end of March 2011, the company owns and operates 11 geostationary satellites.

Services offered include "FleetBroadband," a voice and internet service for ships, "SwiftBroadband," a voice and internet service for aircraft, and "BGAN," which allows calls and internet access with small devices even in places without land-based communication lines. Services are provided through telecommunications carriers in each country, and in Japan, three companies, KDDI, JSAT MOBILE Communications, and Nippon DigiCom, provide services and equipment.

 提供サービスには、船舶向けの音声・インターネットサービス「FleetBroadband(フリートブロードバンド)」、航空機向けの音声・インターネットサービス「SwiftBroadband(スウィフトブロードバンド)」、陸上の通信回線のない場所でも小型端末で通話・インターネットができる「BGAN(ビーギャン)」などがある。
