…The name of Islamic merchants who were active in the spice trade via the Red Sea from the Ayyubid period to the middle of the Mamluk period. The word Kārimī, the origin of the word Kārimī, means "cargo ship" or "group of shipowners" and was already in use since the Fatimid period, but there are many unknowns about its origin. They formed a merchant guild under a guild leader called the "chief of Kārimī" and owned their own ships, as well as setting up their own trading posts in major cities along the trade routes to use as trading centers, warehouses, and lodging. …
