In addition to Chinese Ephedra, the dried stems of E. distachya L. and E. equisetina Bunge from China, and E. gerardiana Wall. from India are also called Maou in herbal medicine. It contains the alkaloid l-ephedrine, which relaxes the spasms of the smooth muscles of the bronchi and is used to treat asthma, but long-term use can cause drug resistance and is not a cure. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used in combination with other herbs to treat symptoms such as chills, fever, headache, and body pain from colds, and has a sweating effect, and is also used to treat measles in children.
