A clan community in ancient Germanic society. Originally a male-line clan organization descended from a single ancestor, it also had a religious character. The zippe was the fundamental living unit of the ancient Germanic people, and under the protection of the zippe people were guaranteed safety in their lives and could expect relief from all zippe members in the event of external harm. Economic life was also based on the zippe, and the private law rights of its members were encompassed by the common ownership of the zippe. When the Germanic peoples settled during their migratory period, the zippe functioned as an agricultural production community. Naturally, the military unit in wartime was also the zippe. The reason that Germanic law is fundamentally a collective law is due to the zippe.
