1588‐1629 Dutch painter. After studying under A. Bloemaert in Utrecht, he spent ten years (1604-1614) in Italy, mainly in Rome, where he was influenced by the art of Caravaggio. Along with van Honthorst, he was a representative of the "Utrecht Caravaggioists," whose works were characterized by strong chiaroscuro using artificial light, and his coloring influenced Vermeer. His religious and genre paintings also show a penchant for depicting bizarre faces, a tradition that was inherited from 16th-century northern painting.
