Dutch painter. After studying under A. Bloemaert in Utrecht, he spent ten years (1604-1614) in Italy, mainly in Rome, where he was influenced by the art of Caravaggio. Along with van Honthorst, he was a representative of the "Utrecht Caravaggioists," whose works were characterized by strong chiaroscuro using artificial light, and his coloring influenced Vermeer. His religious and genre paintings also show a penchant for depicting bizarre faces, a tradition that was inherited from 16th-century northern painting.

オランダの画家。ユトレヒトでブルマールトA.Bloemaertに学んだのち1604‐14年の10年間イタリア，おもにローマに滞在し，カラバッジョの芸術から感化を受ける。ファン･ホントルストとともに人工光線による強烈な明暗法を特色とする〈ユトレヒトのカラバッジョ主義者〉の代表的存在であり，その彩色法はフェルメールに影響を与えた。宗教画･風俗画には，16世紀北方絵画の伝統をひく奇怪な顔貌の描写への傾倒も見られる。
