An extinct volcano on the Armenian Plateau, near the eastern edge of Turkey, Armenia and the border with Iran. It is divided into two peaks, Great Ararat at 5,123m and Little Ararat at 3,925m. Its name is said to come from Urartu, a kingdom that rivaled the Assyrian Empire, and it is said that Noah's Ark landed there. For Armenians, it is a sacred mountain that symbolizes the nation.
