Jushu salt fields - Jushu salt fields

Japanese: 十州塩田 - じっしゅうえんでん
Jushu salt fields - Jushu salt fields
A general term for the salt fields that existed in the ten provinces of Harima, Bizen, Bitchu, Bingo, Aki, Suo, Nagato, Awa, Sanuki, and Iyo along the Seto Inland Sea coast from early modern to modern times. The main salt fields were Ako in Harima, Nozakihama in Bizen, Matsunaga and Tomihama in Bingo, Takehara in Aki, Mitajiri and Hirao in Suo, Muya in Awa, Sakaide in Sanuki, and Takihama in Iyo (Nozakihama and Sakaide were developed in the 1820s). Around the Bunka period (1804-1818), there were 2,500 salt fields, and the annual production amounted to 4.5 million koku (90% of the national production). In 1884, the Jushu Salt Field Association was formed with a charter from the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and in 1886, the Jushu Salt Field Union was launched to make adjustments such as production restrictions, but the movement to lift the restrictions became stronger, and the association naturally disappeared around 1890.
