Earth Gourd - Earth Gourd

Japanese:
Earth Gourd - Earth Gourd

A mushroom of the Basidiomycete, Gastromycete, order Pythium, family Earthcombaceae. It is also called Tsuchigaki (earth persimmon). It is a mushroom with a round pouch on top of a thick star-shaped shell. At first, it is a hard gray-brown sphere about 2-3 cm in diameter, and grows partly exposed from the ground. When it ripens, the thick leathery outer shell splits radially, revealing a round pouch filled with powdery spores. The star-shaped shell opens outward when it gets wet from rain, but when it dries, it shrinks inward and pushes the pouch, releasing the spores from a small hole at the tip of the pouch. It often grows on mountain cliffs from summer to autumn. The contents of the pouch of immature mushrooms in early summer are white and edible. It is delicious when sliced thinly and fried in butter.
