A people based in northeastern China from the mid-6th century to the Tang Dynasty during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. They are said to be a mixture of Mongolian and Tungusic. They were originally based in the east of the Khingan Mountains, but gradually expanded their influence during the Sui Dynasty, and in the Tang Dynasty their territory extended from the confluence of the Heilongjiang (Amur River) and Songhua River to border the Turks on the Mongolian Plateau. They often traded with China, and sometimes invaded the northern border of China together with the Turks and Khitan. However, they did not manage to establish a unified nation. The Mongols, from whom Genghis Khan came, are descendants of the Mengyu Shiwei, who lived in the west of the Khingan Mountains during the Tang Dynasty.
