Birkhoff and OD Kellogg (1878-1932) used this idea to prove the existence of solutions to differential equations as fixed point theorems for (not necessarily linear) completely continuous operators in Banach spaces. This idea was extended to the proof of the existence of solutions to partial differential equations by JP Schauder (1899-1943), J. Leray (1906- ), and others.
