Battle of Baekgang - Battle of Baekgang

Battle of Baekgang - Battle of Baekgang
A naval battle in which Japan was defeated by the Tang Dynasty in 663. Baekgang (also called Hakusukinoe) is the ancient name of the area around the mouth of the Geum River in southwestern Korea. Silla, which had long been at war with Baekje, allied with the Tang Dynasty, which was fighting Goguryeo, and in 660 finally occupied Baekje's capital and took the king prisoner, so Baekje's surviving retainers asked Japan for help. The Yamato court responded by sending a large army to protect Japan's interests in southern Korea, and Empress Saimei and Prince Nakano Oe, among others, set up their headquarters in Kitakyushu to command the army, but the emperor died of an illness. The navy was attacked from both sides by the Tang Dynasty in a naval battle on August 27 and 28, 663, and suffered a major blow, so they withdrew all their troops from Korea and focused on domestic affairs.
