Spanish-born priest and church politician. As Bishop of Toledo, he played a part in the Reconquista and engaged in military activities. In 1343, he was invited to Avignon, where he was dispatched by Pope Clement VI to rebuild the Papal States, with Rome at its center (1353). The Papal States had been privatized by Roman nobles and local lords, and had in effect disintegrated. By utilizing his outstanding military and political abilities, he had succeeded in recovering the city of Rome, as well as the Romagna and Marche, by 1357.

スペイン生れの聖職者，教会政治家。トレド司教として，レコンキスタの一翼をになって軍事活動に従事。1343年アビニョンに招かれ，教皇クレメンス6世によって，ローマを中心とする〈教皇領〉再建のために派遣された(1353)。〈教皇領〉はローマ貴族や各地の君主によって私領化され，事実上解体していたのである。彼は抜群の軍事的･政治的能力を駆使して，57年までに都市ローマをはじめ，ロマーニャやマルケの回復に成功。
