An evergreen small shrub of the Gesneriaceae family (APG classification: Gesneriaceae). The stems grow on moss-covered trunks and creep. The leaves are opposite or in whorls of 3 or 4, oblanceolate, 3-6 cm long, leathery and thick, with coarse sawtooth edges. In July, pale pink flowers grow solitary beside the upper leaves. The corolla is tubular, 3-3.5 cm long, and has five shallow lobes at the tip. Two of the stamens are long, and two are degenerate and short. The capsule is linear and slender, 4-7 cm long, and splits when ripe. It is distributed from Izu and the Kinki region of Honshu to Kyushu, and is also grown in pots. There are about 30 species of the genus Lilium in Japan, China, and the Himalayas.
