〘 noun 〙 (meaning "transportation and tribute". Formerly called "unsho") 1. To transport goods or money and pay them as tribute. (a) In ancient and medieval times, to transport items to be paid as tribute. *Mibu ancient documents in the possession of the Archives and Mausolea Department - Dajokan Fuan, January 24th, 987 (Kanwa 3rd year), " _{_{In response}} , the order was _issued to transport the Enryaku-ji Temple to Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Rank, Taira no Ason Hanjo, offering _a copy of _one copy of 600 volumes of the Great Prajnaparamita Sutra _{made of} gold." Or vnxǒ (unshau) <abbreviated> Nengwo vnjǒ (unjau) suru." ② In the late Muromachi period, it was used to mean taxation, and in the Edo period, it was a type of miscellaneous tax levied at a fixed rate on businesses such as commerce, manufacturing, fishing and hunting, and transportation. They distributed these to their associates. (2) It is not only used when transporting to Kyoto, but also when transporting taxes to feudal lords in each region. Therefore, it is presumed that the original meaning of "Unjo" was to transport and present goods to those in higher positions. It gradually became a fixed term for taxes, and then came to mean taxation itself, as in ②.

(2)京都へ運送する場合に限らず、各地域の領主への年貢の運搬についても使われている。従って、「運上」の原義は上位のものに向かって物品を運搬し、進上することと推察される。それが年貢に関する用語として漸次固定し、その後、②のように課税そのものを意味するようになったのであろう。
