1888‐1980 The second president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the first president of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Born in Long Xuyen in the south, he organized a labor movement in 1912 and defected to France, where he became a sailor in the French Navy and campaigned in support of the Russian Revolution. After returning to Vietnam in 1920, he led the labor movement in Saigon and joined the Association of Revolutionary Comrades of Vietnam Youth, until he was arrested in 1929. While in prison, he joined the Indochinese Communist Party, and after his release in the August Revolution of 1945, he moved to the north and served as chairman of the Standing Committee of the Democratic Republic's National Assembly, chairman of the Fatherland Front's Presidium, and vice president of the state, before becoming president of the state after Ho Chi Minh's death in September 1969.
