...Also, on the east bank of Akazawa, 6 km from Miyazawa, are the Megama and Ogama geysers, which have been designated as special natural monuments, but have not been erupting since a typhoon disaster in 1948. At the southern foot of Arao-dake lies the mud volcano Katayama Jigoku, and in 1975 the Onikobe geothermal power station (maximum output 12,500 kW) began operation nearby. The surrounding area is called the Onikobe Plateau and is designated as Kurikoma Quasi-National Park. In addition to the beauty of the forests and streams, including the primeval beech forest, the geysers and the arch-shaped Naruko Dam are also beautiful, and many tourists come to enjoy the fresh greenery and autumn leaves, as well as skiing in the winter.
