Periodontitis - Periodontitis

This refers to inflammation that occurs in the periodontal ligament, one of the periodontal tissues. Because the periodontal ligament is a thin tissue that holds the teeth in the alveolar bone, inflammation is rarely limited to this thin tissue, and alveolar osteitis often occurs at the same time. Therefore, both are generally called periodontitis. This disease often occurs following inflammation and necrosis of the dental pulp, as well as damage to the apical periodontal tissues caused by treatment instruments, and side effects of drugs used in dental treatment. In the chronic state, symptoms include a feeling that the teeth are floating and pain when chewing, and in the acute state, severe spontaneous pain is observed, and even touching the teeth with the tongue causes pain. In such cases, the tooth is kept at rest, and antibiotics are administered to suppress the acute symptoms, and once the spontaneous pain has subsided, treatment such as root canal treatment or tooth extraction is performed.

歯周組織の一つの歯根膜に生じた炎症をいう。歯根膜は、歯を歯槽骨内に保持する薄い組織であるため、炎症がこの薄い組織にだけ限局していることはほとんどなく、歯槽骨炎をも併発していることが多い。したがって、一般には両者を含めて歯周炎（歯周組織炎）とよばれている。この疾患は、歯髄の炎症、壊死(えし)に継発するほか、治療器具による根尖(こんせん)歯周組織への傷害、歯を治療するときの薬剤の副作用等が原因となって生じることが多い。慢性の状態では、歯が浮いた感じ、物をかむときの痛みといった症状があり、急性化すると激しい自発痛がみられ、舌で歯に触れても痛みがおこる状態となる。こうした場合は、歯の安静を保ち、抗生物質投与で急性症状を抑え、自発痛がなくなってから根管治療、または抜歯等の処置を行う。
