A perennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family that grows in mountain forests (illustration). Its Japanese name means "Hina Mortar Pot" (Hina Doll's Mortar Jar), and is based on the shape of its flower. The underground stem is thick and spreads horizontally. The stem is soft, square in cross section, upright, and 0.5-1m tall. The leaves are opposite, soft, ovate, 7-11cm long and 3-5cm wide. In August and September, a panicle is formed at the end of the stem, and many sparse dark reddish purple flowers bloom. The flowers are urn-shaped, 7-9mm long, with a lip-shaped tip, a long upper lip, and a single spatula-shaped pseudostamen on the inside.
