Imagawa Ujizane

Japanese:
Imagawa Ujizane
[Born] Tenbun 7 (1538)
[Died] December 28, 1614 (Keicho 19). Sengoku daimyo of Edo Suruga. Son of Yoshimoto (→ Imagawa Yoshimoto). Commonly known as Goro. His pen name was Sougin. In 1554 (Tenbun 23), Imagawa Yoshimoto, Takeda Shingen, and Hojo Ujiyasu formed an alliance, and Ujiyasu's daughter became Ujizane's wife. In May 1560 (Eiroku 3), when Yoshimoto was defeated and killed in the Battle of Okehazama, Ujizane succeeded him and took possession of Suruga, Totomi, and Mikawa. In 1561 (Eiroku 5), Shingen's father, Nobutora, who was a fool and dependent on the family, tried to get rid of Ujizane along with Ujizane's vassals Sena, Katsuyama, and Asahina, but was banished from Suruga instead. In 1562 (Eiroku 7), Ujizane fought against Tokugawa Ieyasu and lost Mikawa. In the same year, Shingen, encouraged by his father, Nobutora, sent troops to Yui in Suruga. Ujizane ordered his subordinate, Shikahara Awa no Kami, to defend against them at Satta Pass, but to no avail. His retainers betrayed Shingen, and Ujizane's entire army was defeated. Soon after, Fuchu was also taken, and he fled to Kakegawa Castle in Totomi, where he sought refuge with Asahina Yasuyoshi. At almost the same time as Shingen's invasion of Suruga, Tokugawa Ieyasu began his attack on Totomi, and in January of the same year, he surrounded Ujizane's Kakegawa Castle. In May, peace was made between the Tokugawa and Hojo, and Ujizane was transferred from Kakegawa to Tokura in Izu, which was under Hojo control. Later, Ujizane had a falling out with Hojo Ujimasa, and fled to Ieyasu. In March of the 10th year of Tensho (82), Sunpu was given to Ieyasu by Nobunaga, who had destroyed the Takeda clan. Ujizane was good at kemari (a traditional Japanese game of kemari), and later went to Kyoto, where he was supported by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He later became a monk, but later served Ieyasu. His descendants became noble families in the Edo Shogunate and took the name of the Shinagawa clan. His posthumous name was Sengan-in Toyoyama Sogin.
