Italian novelist. Using trivial everyday incidents as a starting point, he dramatically portrays the shadows, anxieties, and feelings of guilt that linger deep within the psyche of modern people. His major works include Delitto d'onore (1961), L'ombra delle colline (The Shadow of the Hill) (64), Il buio e il miele (Darkness and Honey) (69), Racconti di vent'anni (Twenty Years' Short Stories) (74), and Il primo quarto di luna (The First Quarter of the Moon) (76).

Arpino

A town in the province of Frosinone in the Lazio region in central-west Italy. It is located about 95 km southeast of Rome, on the left bank of the Liri River. It is a town at the western foot of the Apennine Mountains. It was an important base for the Volscians in the 5th century BC, but was conquered by the Romans in 305 BC. It is the birthplace of Cicero and G. Marius, and an ancient Roman wall remains. In the Middle Ages it came under the control of the Lombards, and a medieval castle also remains. The main industries are agricultural product processing and woolen textiles. Population: 7,811 (estimated 1991).

イタリア中西部,ラツィオ州フロジノーネ県の町。ローマ東南東約 95km,リリ川左岸に位置する。アペニン山脈西麓の町。前5世紀頃ボルスキ人の重要な拠点であったが,前 305年ローマ人に征服された。キケロや G.マリウス誕生の地で,古代ローマの城壁が残っている。中世にはランゴバルド人の支配下におかれ,中世の城も残っている。おもな産業は農産物の加工,毛織物工業。人口 7811 (1991推計) 。
