A basin in central Nepal that includes the capital, Kathmandu. It is also called the Kathmandu Valley. It is a small basin about 20km east to west and 35km north to south, located in the intermediate lowlands at an altitude of about 1,300m between the Mahabharat mountain range in the south and the Great Himalayas in the north. It is blessed with fertile soil and produces a lot of rice, wheat, rapeseed, etc. From around 1200 to the mid-18th century, Newar culture (the main inhabitants of Kathmandu) flourished under the Malla dynasty. In the mid-18th century, the Gurkha (Gorkha) forces conquered Kathmandu and established the Shah (Gorkha) dynasty that exists to this day.
