Abbott, George
Born June 25, 1887 in Forestville, New York
[Died] January 31, 1995, Miami Beach American playwright and director. He studied under Professor GP Baker at Harvard University, and began performing on stage in 1913, and in 1919 switched to playwriting and directing. He produced many excellent popular comedies and musicals, including Three Men on a Horse (1935), The Pajamas Game (54), Damn Yankees (55), and Fiorello! (59). In 1963, he published his autobiography, Mister Abbott, which tells the inside story of the theater world. In 1966, the Adelphi Theatre in New York was renamed the George Abbott Theatre to celebrate his illustrious career.

American physician. Graduated from Harvard University in 1862. After serving as a military surgeon during the Civil War, he briefly opened a private practice, but from 1886 he served as Massachusetts State Commissioner of Health for the rest of his life. He made pioneering contributions to public health activities, and the statistics he compiled in particular became the model for today's health statistics. His main work is "Past and Present Condition of Public Hygiene and State Medicine in the United States" (1900).

[Died] October 22, 1922. A pastor in New York, USA. Son of J. Abbott. He advocated the "Social Gospel" which sought to apply Christianity to social problems, and opposed socialism and laissez-faire. He was involved in editing the magazine Christian Union (later renamed Outlook). His books include Christianity and Socialism (1897) and The Rights of Man (1901).

[Died] December 17, 1973, Maryland, Riverdale. American astronomer. Graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1894). Director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (1907-44). In addition to his research on solar radiation, he also conducted numerous studies on solar eclipses, infrared spectra, and solar observation instruments. His works include The Sun (11), The Earth and the Stars (25), and The Foundations of Astronomy (27).

[Died] August 4, 1633. Archbishop of Canterbury, Croydon. Theologian. Studied at Oxford University and later served as Vice-Chancellor of his alma mater. He had Puritanical tendencies and was at odds with the High Churchmen who placed great importance on ritual and ceremonies. He defended the hereditary monarchy of England and was recognized by James I, but later came into conflict with Charles I, was dismissed, and died in obscurity.
