A metal melting method that uses a plasma arc (an arc discharge of an airflow narrowed by heat and magnetic action). A transferred plasma arc is used, which uses the discharge between the electrode built into the torch and the metal itself. Because plasma torches are difficult to develop, their development is short, taking place in the 1960s, and they have only been used as an industrial process in the former East Germany, the former Soviet Union, and Japan. For economic reasons, the objects of melting are limited to high-grade special steels, superalloys, and high-melting-point metals, but in the former East Germany, furnaces of up to 35 tonnes were used to produce various types of steel, including low-alloy steel.
