Thread-waisted wasp (Jigabachi)

Japanese: ジガバチ(似我蜂) - ジガバチ(英語表記)thread‐waisted wasp
Thread-waisted wasp (Jigabachi)
An insect (illustration) belonging to the Hymenoptera family of Digger wasps. The body is black, the abdomen is indigo blue, and the second abdominal segment is reddish brown. It is a slender wasp with a body length of about 20 mm and a thin abdominal stalk. It is found in Japan, Ussuri, northern China, and the Korean Peninsula. It hunts lepidopteran larvae such as cutworms, cabbage white butterflies, and looper worms. It digs holes in the ground and buries its prey to feed its larvae. It makes a buzzing sound with its wings when digging. It was named jigabachi because people in the past thought that if they buried caterpillars, they would emerge as wasps, saying "jigajiga."
