Shikano Buzaemon

Japanese:
Shikano Buzaemon
Year of death: August 13, Genroku 12 (September 6, 1699)
Year of birth: 1649 (Keian 2)
A Rakugo performer from the early Edo period. Born in Kyoto or Naniwa (Osaka), he traveled to Edo and became a lacquer artist. He was skilled in theatrical Zashiki-style stories, and was invited to perform at various houses. Thirteen stories, including "Fukui Tokuan Monsatsu," recorded in the entry for January 10, 1681, in Ishibashi Seian's diary "Kajo," which he listened to at the Edo residence of Miura Tametaka, a chief retainer of the Kishu (Wakayama) domain, are the oldest recorded titles of Rakugo stories, and their contents can be inferred by comparing them with stories included in story books such as "Kano Buzaemon Kuden Hanashi" (1683) and "Shika no Makifude" (1686). In the early Genroku period, a rumor spread that a horse could speak human language, and talismans to ward off epidemics and prescriptions for medicines that the horse had predicted were sold. In 1693, the masterless samurai Chikushien (Dan)emon, the source of the rumor, was arrested, and he confessed that he had been inspired by the story in "Shika no Makihitsu," and Takezaemon was also interrogated. As a result, the wood blocks of "Shika no Makihitsu" were burned, and Takezaemon was exiled to Izu Oshima, but this is suspicious. In any case, Edo Rakugo fell into decline, and there was a gap of about 100 years until it was revived by Utei Enma. <References> Nobuhiro Shinji, "Shitakou Bungei" ("Lectures on Genroku Literature," Volume 1)
