A unique type of trial that appeared in the Westphalia region of Germany and was particularly active between the 13th and mid-15th centuries. The court that carried out this trial was called the Vehme Tribunal. Vehme here means punishment, and this court was a type of criminal court directly under the king. It was also called the Secret Tribunal because it no longer had participation from the general public. Trials were conducted by one presiding judge and seven judges, who also functioned as accusers of suspects of crimes punishable by death.
