The former was characterized by systematic research, the formation of a vast collection, and art education, all of which were promoted by such people as ES Morse, Fenollosa, William S. Bigelow (1850-1926), La Farge, and Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), who came to Japan from the early to mid-Meiji period. These collections became the backbone of the Japanese art collections at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Freer Gallery of Art.
