Gaston, P.

...A group of abstract art that developed in the United States from the 1940s to the 1950s. Representative artists include Gorky, de Kooning, Hans Hofmann (1880-1966), Adolph Gottlieb (1903-74), Robert Motherwell (1915-91), Pollock, Philip Guston (1913-80), Franz Kline (1910-62), Clyfford Still (1904-80), Barnett Newman (1905-70), and Rothko. Although the style varies depending on the artist, overall it can be seen as an attempt to express emotions, inner life, and spirituality in an abstract style, and can be said to be the first uniquely American art.
