〘Noun〙 (formerly also "zenshi" or "senji")① A monk who has mastered Zen meditation. This is the opposite of a hoshi or risshi. In ancient times, the ten people who served at the inner training hall of the imperial court were called the ten naigubu zenshi. ※Nihon Shoki (720), November 6th year of the Bidatsu era (Maeda Honin) "Several volumes of sutras and commentaries (reading aloud ), as well as risshi, zenshi, and six workers for building the temple were presented"② A title given by the imperial court to a Zen monk of great virtue.
