An insect of the family Pyralidae in the order Lepidoptera. Wing span is 2.5-3.5cm. In general, males are smaller than females and have darker wings. The forewings are pale gray-yellow with numerous dark brown lines running along the wing veins, a faint white line under the middle lobe, a white line on the outer edge, and a black spot at the edge of the middle lobe. The hind wings are whitish, but slightly gray-brown. They are found throughout Japan north of Okinawa Island, Taiwan, the Korean peninsula, eastern Siberia, and China. The larvae parasitize turfgrasses, but were once thought to infest rice plants as well. The larvae live in the soil and build stalks out of dung and dead leaves, tying them together with silk, and live and feed in these stalks.
