Emura Hokkai - Emura Hokkai

Japanese:
Emura Hokkai - Emura Hokkai

A Confucian scholar and Chinese poet of the mid-Edo period. His given name was Ju, and his pen name was Kimsoku. He was from Kyoto. He was the second son of the Confucian scholar Ito Ryushu (1683-1755), and inherited the prestigious Emura family, which was also a member of the Confucian world of Kyoto. He was known as a brilliant scholar along with his elder brother Ito Kinri (1710-1772) and younger brother Seita Danso (1719-1785). He studied Neo-Confucianism, and although he lacked original insight, he cultivated many disciples with his moderate academic style. He was also deeply interested in poetry and prose, and in the Chinese poetry world at the time, the style of the Kobunji school, which was committed to imitating the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty, was influential, but he wrote "History of Japanese Poetry" and "Selected Japanese Poems" from the standpoint of correcting the excesses of this style, and was instrumental in establishing Chinese poetry in the Japanese culture.
